Mental Health and Psychosocial Support

Enhancing Well-being and Resilience through Comprehensive Care

Overview

Empowering Individuals To Achieve Psychological Stability

The Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Program (MHPSS) addresses the critical mental health and child protection needs of children, their caretakers, and vulnerable communities. Through trauma-informed care, community-based interventions, and capacity-building initiatives, the program empowers individuals to achieve psychological stability, rebuild relationships, and enhance resilience.

The Challenge

In Uganda, mental health services remain underdeveloped, with limited access to counseling, therapy, and psychosocial support for vulnerable populations. Many individuals, especially in rural areas, lack access to essential mental health services, while cultural misconceptions and stigma often deter those in need from seeking help. Domestic violence, child abuse, and transgenerational trauma further compromise children’s safety and development, and the lack of training for teachers and caregivers in trauma-informed practices exacerbates the issue. These challenges significantly compound the vulnerability of children and their caretakers, restricting their ability to recover from adversity and thrive.

Our Approach

Counseling and Psychotherapy
  • We provide both in-person and electronic counseling services tailored to the needs of individuals, families, and groups.
  • Trauma-informed methodologies such as Community-Based Therapy and Inter-Personal Group Therapy ensure effective interventions.
Integrated Health and Legal Clinics
  • Psycho-medical and legal aid clinics offer holistic support to address mental health, medical, and legal needs.
  • Follow-up recovery home visits and on-site counseling ensure sustained improvement and timely interventions.
Child-Centered Interventions
  • Safe, child-friendly spaces and play therapy rooms provide environments where children can heal and grow.
  • Parenting sessions strengthen child-caretaker relationships, reducing child abuse and domestic violence.
  • Teachers and caregivers are trained in trauma-informed methodologies to support affected children.
Community Engagement
  • Mass sensitization campaigns combat stigma and raise awareness of mental health issues.
  • Community-based assessments identify and address psychosocial needs effectively.
Capacity Building and Research
  • Documentation of relapses and outcomes informs evidence-based programming.
  • Experiential therapies and capacity-building initiatives empower communities to take ownership of mental health solutions.
