Gender and Sexuality
Empowering Communities through Gender Equity and Comprehensive Support
Overview
A Society Where All Individuals Thrive!
The Gender and Sexuality Program is dedicated to addressing gender-based challenges and advancing equality through targeted interventions. By establishing systems that empower survivors, promote behavioral change, and advocate for inclusive policies, the program strives to create a society where all individuals, regardless of gender, can achieve their full potential.
This initiative integrates Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR), multi-survivor programming, and cross-generational engagement to address the root causes of inequality. By fostering partnerships and building sustainable community systems, SCSO ensures the program has a lasting impact on vulnerable populations.
The Challenge
In Uganda, societal norms, economic dependency, and limited access to resources perpetuate gender inequalities. Despite national and international commitments to gender equity, women and young people face systemic barriers to accessing education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
Key challenges include:
- Prevalence of gender-based violence: Statistics indicate high levels of domestic and sexual violence, with limited avenues for safe disclosure and support.
- Limited access to SRHR services: Many rural communities lack access to essential SRHR services, leaving women and young people vulnerable to unplanned pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and reproductive health issues.
- Persistent gender norms: Deeply rooted cultural practices continue to restrict women’s rights and limit their participation in decision-making processes.
- Underrepresentation in advocacy: Survivors of gender-based violence often lack platforms to influence policies and promote systemic change.
Our Approach
Comprehensive SRHR Support:
The program establishes an SRHR unit to address the reproductive health needs of women and young people. This unit provides education, counseling, and access to essential services, enabling beneficiaries to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
Behavioral Change Initiatives:
A dedicated behavioral change unit promotes community awareness and challenges harmful gender norms. This includes workshops, media campaigns, and community dialogues that foster a culture of respect and inclusivity.
Skipped-Generational Engagement:
The program includes a Skipped-Generational Unit that encourages intergenerational learning and mentorship, bridging gaps between youth and older generations. This approach promotes mutual understanding and collective action against gender disparities.
Survivor Support and Activism:
Multi-survivor programming creates safe spaces for survivors to share their experiences and access support. Survivor groups are transformed into advocacy associations, enabling them to influence policy and promote community-wide change.
Strategic Partnerships:
By collaborating with organizations specializing in gender equality and SRHR, the program leverages expertise and resources to maximize impact. These partnerships enhance service delivery and advocacy efforts.
Our Solution
The Gender and Sexuality Program offers a holistic solution to entrenched gender inequalities:
- SRHR Unit: Provides comprehensive services and education to meet reproductive health needs.
- Behavioral Change Campaigns: Educates communities and fosters attitudinal change toward gender equality.
- Survivor Empowerment: Builds sustainable support systems for survivors and amplifies their voices.
- Advocacy for Policy Reform: Uses programming-based evidence to influence legal, policy, and behavioral changes.
